Ask yourself, do I know my health insurance policy? You might say yes, but I bet you don't. How can I be so sure?
Have you read your policy? "Yes" you say. I meant all the way through.
The fact is that many people do not read their health insurance policies all the way through. There may be clauses in the policy that will pay 100% for procedures, vaccines, or teeth cleaning. Maybe your yearly physical is covered (maybe even without the co-pay). Some health insurance policies offer a "reimbursment" on a health club membership (sometimes exceeding $500 to $1000 a year). Insurance companies have shifted there focus on preventive care. Why? Because the last year of someone life is the costliest in the eyes of an insurance company. So, the healthier a person lives, the less the insurance company has to pay in the long run.
Along with this new philosophy that these insurance companies have ask yourself a few questions. If you were trying to reduce your weight and knew that you could get help for free, what would be the chances you take advantage of this type of help? Or, If you wanted to quit smoking, it might nice to know you could get free patches to help you stop smoking?
What are the open enrollment times for your health insurance policy that is offered by your employer?
Can you cancel things like dental or vision after you enroll for them?
Interesting true story. A friend of mine told me she cancelled her vision coverage on her health insurance plan at work (which cost her $3.59 a week, not much but adds up). I asked her why she did that. She told me that open enrollment was about five months away and since she just got her eye examined (she was fine) she would pick the coverage again during the open enrollment period. Apparently, she has been doing this for years.
Now I am not endorsing this method, but illustrating a point. She knew what she could do with her policy. She knew what worked best for her and went for it. Know your policy and make it work for you. Personal and family health insurance is to expensive not to get everything you can get out of it.
Read and learn your policy. Use it to it's full extent. The more you use your insurance the more affordable it becomes.
